How to Raise the Stakes in a Scene

Stakes are what a character stands to lose if they fail. You raise them by making the cost of failure concrete, personal, and hard to avoid — so the reader feels that this scene matters.

How it works

A scene without stakes is just a sequence of events. Stakes are the “or else.” If nothing bad happens when the character fails, the reader has no reason to lean in. Every scene should answer one question: what does this cost if it goes wrong — and does the reader know it?

Raise them four ways. Make failure CONCRETE — a specific loss, not “something bad.” Make it PERSONAL — it threatens what this character values, not a generic danger. Make it CLOSE — a clock, a cornering, no easy exit. And let the character KNOW and dread it — a stake they ignore won’t tense the reader. One caution: death is often the weakest stake, because it’s abstract and final; losing a relationship, a self-image, or a last chance usually stings more.

You rarely need bigger explosions. You need a smaller, truer thing the character can’t afford to lose, placed where failure is one wrong move away.

Before

She walked through the empty house, checking each room. Nothing. She went upstairs and kept looking.

After

If she didn’t find the inhaler before the attack peaked, Mara had maybe four minutes. Every dark room she cleared was one she couldn’t go back and check. Upstairs, a door she’d left open was shut.

Nothing exploded. The stake is a small object, a clock, and someone she loves — placed where failure costs everything.

Exercise

Take a scene and finish this sentence from the character’s point of view: “If I fail here, I lose ___.” If the blank is vague or empty, the scene has no stakes. Make it specific and personal — then put a clock or a closing door on it.

When a scene feels flat, TellerCraft’s coach names the lever — stakes — and asks what failure actually costs here, then helps you make it concrete on your own page. It never writes the scene for you; it teaches you to.
